Weaves from India
The challenge was simple, but damn tough!
Each typography student was assigned one weave/textile from one Indian state.
They were then first challenged to incorporate the given form into respective Indian regional script; and later asked to apply the designed letterforms into some interesting application.
02
Indian Script and Typography
This project was as much a challenge for the students as it was for me planning it! The design primitive was not a visual reference but an audio reference. Yes! I set a super challenging task where the students had to design letterforms in Indian scripts based on one Indian classical Raga or instrument or feeling. Not only that, they had to design applications relevant to the letterforms they designed. Each and every project featured a different raga / instrument / feeling brilliantly maintaining the cultural sanctity of the script.
03
Indian Script Study
This project made the students learn the value of research and documentation. Each one was given one Indian script to study. They were expected to learn widely based on pointers provided like- its origin, historical lineage, evolution, timeline, development, vowels and consonants, application in media. The study was not limited to these, but students were expected to explore as much as they could and enjoy the entire designing process of compiling the information into a book.
04
Indian Folktales and Folk-Art Forms
This project was a superb design take on the book - Folk Tales from India by A. K. Ramanujan. Students were given one folktale each, and were expected to choose a Folk-Art form from that state in which the story was told. The objective was to make story reading an interesting affair, thereby attracting non-readers towards a book-reading experience.

Typography Explorations
Letting them loose to experiment, students do brilliant executions. They learn to use paper various ways, and at times even go beyond paper. Once they know how to play, there's no stopping them!
